Seattle Redhawks men’s soccer will open up the 2021 campaign today as they host the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Championship Field. The Redhawks come into today’s opener as the 17th ranked team in the nation and are currently riding the longest win streak in the NCAA.
This has been an in state matchup that has historically been dominated by the Bulldogs. In their eight matchups, Gonzaga has been victorious six times and have a 3-1 record at home and away vs the Redhawks. Seattle did win the last matchup between the two schools, getting the 2-0 result back on Sept. 10, 2017 at Championship Field. The two did meet in a exhibition back on Jan. 23 in Yakima, a 3-1 win for the Redhawks.
What to Watch For:
Seattle U is one of the best teams in the nation and they were recognized as that when they were selected to win the WAC in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. On top of that, they also placed four player on the Preseason All-WAC team. Noe Meza, Alex Acton-Petronotis, Akili Kasim, and James Morris all were nominated to the team. The awards didn’t stop there though, as Meza was voted WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Acton-Petronotis was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
