Week 8 Betting Re-Cap

Week 8 was the 1st week of 3 days of racing and ran last Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with race cards of 8, 8 and 7 races with a total of 23 races. There was a total of 164 starters averaging 7.1 starters per race. The best day for pay-offs was on Wednesday that featured an 8 race card with 65 starters or 8.1 per race which may be the best per race starter average of the meet, much of that due to the first two 2-year-old races.

The horizontal bets, pick 3-4-5 and 6 were not where you found the pay-offs with 2 of the race winners paying 9-2 or $11 and then 1 2-1 winner and the rest were less than 2-1 winners. For the day the average win pay-off was 2-1 at $6.90. The pick 3 high pay was $38 and low pay $8.70, the 3 pick 4’s averaged $86 and the pick 5 was a paltry $147.

The money was in the 10-cent superfectas and 50-cent trifectas. The winners on Wednesday were an average of 2-1 but the place horses average 14-1, the show horses were 13-1 and 4th place horses averaged 14-1. These led to an average 50-cent trifecta pay of $183.95 or 366-1 and the 10-cent superfecta paid an average of $195.38 or 1,952-1.

This was not the case of 1 or 2 big pays but was well spread for the trifectas had half the races pay more than $115 with the high of $757 and the lowest pay was $34. The 10-cent superfectas had 5 10-cent pays of more than $118 starting with the high pay of $573 then $393, $178, $137 and $118. The other pays remained healthy as well at $77, $64 and the low was $21. Remember all of these pay-offs began with no winner more than 9-2 and an average of a 2-1 winner.  Plus the superfecta has the lowest take out of just 15% of all bets which leaves more of the pool to be paid back to the winning tickets.

Other bets that paid well on Wednesday were the $2 place bets with half of them more than $10 with a high of $18. The $2 shows weren’t bad either with 9 of them paying more than $5 out of 27 pays with the high show $11.20. The $2 combo tickets actually paid better from the 2nd place horse in 5 of the 8 races than the winning horse paid. The other big pay-off of the day was in the final race in the Super Hi 5, picking the top 5 horses in order and it paid $1,936 in the get-away race.

This was not a hard bet to get. There were 2 overwhelming favorites at 6-5 and 9-5 with Juan Gutierrez and Alex Cruz the #1 and #3 jockeys aboard. There 2 other horses as the 3rd and 4th favorites at 8-1 and then the other 4 ranged from 11-1  If you took those 2 for the win position then included the 2 8-1 shots to run 2nd and 3rd and then went all to all the total cost of that 50-cent ticket is $120. The ticket would have been 3-8 with 3-6-7-8 with 3-6-7-8 with All with All. The 8-5 shot won followed by the 2 8-1’s then a 69-1 bomber finished 4th and the 6-5 favorite was 5th. Literally the top 4 favorites finished in the top 5 and it returned nearly $2,000.

Not to mention if you went partners for a $60 dollar bet for a $969 return or with 4 people in at $30 each for $485 each. The all’s are critical and even when they finish one place above the bottom of your ticket, such as 2nd instead of 3rd in the trifecta, 3rd instead of 4th in the super and 4th instead of 5th like in this race that 69-1 shot was no doubt a huge factor in the pay amount. Many will not pull the trigger on that bigger bet instead they might go 3-8 with 3-6-7-8 with 3-6-7-8 with 3-6-7-8 with All for a $24 bet and lose when the 69-1 shot passes the fading favorite front speed in the final 50 yards. This is why those serious about hitting big pay-outs but on a budget need to team up, it is a great way to bet on a reasonable budget and have a chance at cashing big.

Other big pays last week saw the horizontal bets improve with the largest pick 4 on Thursday in the 1st of 3 and was kicked off with a pair of 8-1 shots who won the 1st and 2nd races which also resulted in a $72 daily double and the 3rd race won by a 7-2 price returned a nice $281 50-cent pick 3. The 4th race was taken by a 5-2 winner so the odds of 8-1 to 8-1 to 7-2 to 5-2 was good for $1,370 in the pick 4. The favorites then started coming through and the prices dropped with the 2nd pick 4 was good for $139 and the final one was just $32. The pick 5 was just $123 and the Jackpot pick $301.

On Saturday there were only 7 races and it was pretty chalky all day until the final race when Mr Atlantico with Sean Gilpin won at nearly 20-1 returning $41.90 on the $2 win. Mr Atlantico also kicked off a $87 trifecta and a $380 10-cent superfecta. The longshot also boosted the pick 5 to a nice $530 pay and the 20-cent Jackpot 6 paid $1,604 which meant more than one winning ticket was cashed. There was a nice $10,101 carry-over to Thursday, July 8th in the Jackpot.

Week 9 begins Thursday evening with an 8 race card with another 8 races on Saturday evening and 9 on Sunday afternoon. A total of 169 horses are entered with a 6.75 per race so there are going to be some great betting opportunities. Two Stakes races on Sunday are well matched and 3 returning Stakes winners from this year are back in the starting gates. Look for our preview Stakes story for more on Sunday’s racing. Until then, remember you gotta pick ’em and then you have to figure out how to bet ’em that’s why the Betting Parlor is open, good luck!!
