Sounders Remain Unbeaten, Blank LA Galaxy 3-0

Russell Brown

SEATTLE,WA-Ruidíaz picks up a brace and Brad Smith makes it 2 goals in as many matches, as the Sounders took down Western Conference rivals LA Galaxy Sunday night. The win kept the Rave Green undefeated on the season (2-1-0) and has them atop of the table in the west.

RECAP:

Seattle was in control of the match from the opening kickoff it seemed. Despite the high press by the Galaxy, Seattle was able to break down the defense of LA and create several chances in the attacking third.

The first major look came in the 20’ when Will Bruin gave a through ball to Brad Smith who found Ruidíaz in the box who made a difficult shot look routine as he gave the home club a 1-0 lead. It was a continuation of the excellent play of Smith that clearly carried over from the LAFC match last week.

It got even better just three minutes later when Smith cleaned up a lose ball in the box and drove it into the back of the net, securing his second goal of the season and of his Sounder career. Sounders took the 2-0 lead into the locker room.

The second half was one of chances that could not be converted. Both the Sounders and Galaxy had looks that could have either put the game away or made it more competitive, but we stayed at the same score line through another 45 minutes.

Then came a attack by Seattle led by sub Jimmy Medranda. He dropped it off for Raúl who got his brace and sealed the home victory.

SCORING SUMMARY:

  • 20’ – Ruidíaz (Assisted: Smith & Bruin)
  • 23’ – Smith
  • 90’+5 – Ruidíaz (Assisted: Medranda)

THOUGHTS:

Was another great early performance by a club that had several questions coming into the season. Many did not know if this attack would be as lethal with the loss of Morris and with the implication of a new formation, yet the team has eight goals in three matches.

Defensively might be where this squad has shined the most early on however. They have allowed just one goal to this point and have a point differential of +7. This is huge for a club that has been known for a leaky back line over the past few years. Stefan Frei also made a couple of awe inspiring saves that kept the match in Seattle’s control. Coach Schmetzer said in the post-game press conference that we should pump the breaks on the defense for now, as Minnesota United might not be the team we thought they were.

Another bright sign was the return of Nicolás Lodeiro. The Sounders captain made his return to the pitch in the 65’ as a sub, the first time the Uruguayan midfielder had done that while wearing the Rave Green. He looked sharp in limited minutes and getting him back into form will be a huge addition to a squad that is currently clicking on all fronts.

One last note, the new Hendrix kits are easily the best in club history.

WHAT’S NEXT:

The Cascadia titans clash in a battle down in the Rose City as the Sounders take on the Portland Timbers. That game is in a week, on May 9th at Providence Park.

Portland is off to a rough start through three matches as they have only come up with three points. They have a goal differential of -3 and most recently fell to FC Dallas 1-4 on Saturday. In their defense, they have also been a participant in the CONCACAF Champions League as well in the early portion of the season and have been performing much better in that tournament. The Timbers currently are level 1-1 with Club América after the 1st leg.

Despite their MLS struggles, Portland always shows up for a showdown with the Sounders. Stats and records can be thrown out of the window when they clash. The game is scheduled for a 12 pm kickoff and can be seen on ABC.
