After nearly three weeks off due to the international break, the Seattle Sounders (5-3-0 18pts) are back in action as they take a trip to California and take on the LA Galaxy (5-0-2 15pts) tomorrow. The match features two of the best teams in the western conference and is scheduled for a 6 p.m. PT kickoff at Dignity Health Sports Complex.

WHERE WE LEFT OFF

When we last saw the Rave Green in action they were settling for a 0-0 draw with expansion club Austin FC. It marked back-to-back matches (ATL 4/23) that Seattle dropped two points in. It raised questions on whether their new formation was finally being figured out by the rest of the league.

Despite the glass half empty crowd, the Sounders still remained unbeaten and atop of the western table heading into the break with 18 points. Yes, there are several questions about this team but not any that are too concerning at the moment.

WHO’S MISSING

Due to the international break, several players on different clubs are currently representing their countries. The Sounders were no exception as Xavier Arreaga and Raul Ruidíaz both were called in to national duty. However, it was just reported that Ruidíaz would be available for the Sounders after Peru left him off the roster for Copa América.

This is big for Seattle as Rual is currently the second leading goal scorer (6) in the MLS. Yes, it is never fun playing without one of your starting center backs in Arreaga, but having Ruidíaz back will surely alleviate some of that.

KNOW THY OPPONENT

The Galaxy sit just a couple of spots behind Seattle in the west with 15 pts. LA is in pretty good form as of late winning three of their previous four matches, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Portland back on May 8th.

LA is led by their own fantastic no. 9 in Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, who is the only player with more goals this season than Ruidíaz at seven. He was not able to put one in the back of the net the last time these two sides met, so he is sure to be on the hunt for one come tomorrow.

Joining Chicharito will be the Galaxy’s two newest signings in winger Kevin Cabral and defender Séga Coulibaly. Cabral has made three appearances, two of which were starts, since his signing while Coulibaly has yet to make his debut.

Not Joining Chicharito will be defender Derrick Williams who is serving a suspension for a terrible tackle on Portland’s Andy Polo. The Timber’s winger will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured quadriceps muscle as a result of the Williams tackle. The suspension will be six games in total with Williams already serving the first.

WHEN LAST WE MET

Back on May 2nd, the Sounders put a beat down on the Galaxy to the tune of a 3-0 win. Ruidíaz picked up a brace for the Rave Green while Brad Smith chipped in another as they secured their second largest victory of the young season. The Sounders defensive ability was on full display during the match as well, keeping the Galaxy off the scoreboard and neutralizing Chichirito.
