The Betting Parlor
There were two season high returns in week 9 starting with the Pick 5. The 50-cent Pick 5 on Saturday that returned one lucky ticket holder $33,298.95. Yep, just 1 winning ticket on Saturday. This was and has been much to the contrary of the horizontal bets (the pick 3, 4, 5, 6 and DD) recently and is usually what happens in a race season.
The consecutive win bets usually pay a lot more early in a season as bettors are trying to get a feel for who is ready to run, which barns are hot, how will shipping horses do compared to those who have been in training and so on.
The Pick 3 high average pay-offs was peaked on day 9, June 16, with a 375-1 average pay for that day and pushing the overall average to it’s highest of the season at 201-1. Since then it has dwindled 159-1 with a few days of good pay-outs. The Pick 4 also topped out on June 16th paying off the 3 Pick-4’s of an average of more than $1,500 and boosting the season average to 1,193-1. Since that high point the season average has dropped to as low as 833-1 but got a boost this past Saturday and now sits at 875-1.
The Pick 5 prior to the huge pay-out on Saturday had a $16,000 and 2 $20,000+ pay-offs. On day 4 the pay was $16,677 and the season average was up to 10,730-1. Remember the Pick 3-4-5’s are all 50-cent bets so you double the pay-off to get the traditional #-1 odds.
On day 9 the pay-off was $28,860 and a season average of 12,345-1 and then paid $22,254 3 days later on Father’s Day and the average odds skyrocketed to 14,012-1. Since then the average odds dropped to 9,302-1 after last Thursday but then with the 33k pay on Saturday jumped back to 12,486-1 and after Sunday’s racing where the Pick 5 still paid a healthy $1,605 the season odds dropped to 11,997-1.
Hitting the $33k really took a heck of a handicapping effort and a likely big ticket or and this is my hunch, the winner may have simply been playing birthdates or anniversaries like the Lotto, the winning numbers were 3-1-1-6-7, so a March 11th, 1967 birthdate may have been the magic combination.

There were no favorites to win in this Pick 5 sequence and began with a 9-1 shot defeating an odds-on 2-5 choice in the 1st leg. In the 2nd race of the P5, a 3-1 shot won but was the 3rd favorite of a 6 horse field with 5 horses between 5-2 and 5-1. The 3rd winner was 5-1 but it was a field of 8 with 2 2-1 shots, the 5-1 winner and a 6-1 followed by a pair of 10-1’s, a 17-1 and the long shot that was a reasonable 21-1. In the 4th leg there was a heavy 1-1 that didn’t hit the board, a 2-1 shot that just failed to last as a 6-1 won with a 9-1 a head back. In the final leg, a 17-1 shot defeated a 7-1, I am not sure it would have mattered which horse of the two in a head bob photo would have changed the outcome of just 1 winner as a 17-1 shot got the better of a 7-1 but the 17-1 certainly assured the lone winning ticket.
Now you know why I am guessing maybe a birthdate could have been the only way to come up with this winning combination.
We should point out although the $33k is a huge pay-out it is not the largest pay of the year, that goes to a single winning ticket holder in the 20-cent Jackpot 6 on June 23 that had a $60,000+ carry-over and returned $81,409.82 and works out to be a massive 407,048-1 odds.
The other massive pay-off was Sunday’s Super Hi-5 (A Pentafecta) where you have to pick the top 5 horses in exact order of finish. The Super Hi-5 returned $5,070 and really was one that was hittable not that a Lotto number player couldn’t have had the 6-2-4-8-7 combination.
The field of 9 top 3 favorites finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 4-1 won followed by the 2-1 favorite 2nd and 3rd place top the 3-1 2nd choice. A 14-1 shot ran 4th and the longest shot on the board got up for 5th at 37-1. To box the top 3 finishers and go all with all for 4th and 5th position is a $90 bet. Again, for those trying to play on a budget teaming up with others can make these wagers very reasonable and still get paid well.
Week 10 begins tonight (Thursday) with a 6pm post time and continues on Saturday at 6:30 and Sunday at 2:30. Two Stakes races on tap for Sunday as well for two 2-year-olds, the Angie C and the King County Express Stakes. Tonight there is a big carry-over in the 20-cent Pick 6 Jackpot of $20,428.
