SEATTLE, WA –The Sounders weren’t able to overcome mental mistakes and fatigue as they lost at home to Sporting Kansas City Sunday night. The loss was their second of the season and their first at Lumen Field.

Tough Break

The first goal conceded by the Sounders is easily the most questionable. It came after a foul was called on Dany Leyva just outside of the box that resulted in a yellow card. The problem was that it appeared that Leyva got all ball on the challenge and it more than likely should not have been called.

It allowed for Johnny Russell to step up in a dangerous spot and sneak in a free kick that actually hit the inside of the post, just outside of the diving reach of Stefan Cleveland. SKC had the lead in the 31st.

Sloppy Giveaway

Just a little over 10 minutes later, a sloppy pass by Kelyn Rowe led to the second goal of the night. The problem was that Rowe was the last man on the line for the Sounders, so giving the ball away meant that SKC had a jail break towards the Rave Green goal. Rowe was able to get back but by then it was a three on two advantage for the visitors and those odds aren’t great.

Dániel Sallói from the right put the ball past Cleveland and doubled the lead for his side. It was the first time this season that Seattle found themselves down two goals,

Fredy Cuts the Lead in Half

Earlier in the match, Montero nearly broke the internet when he wound up for a bicycle kick that was just saved by Tim Melia. While not quite the same flair, he was able to bag a goal in the 51st on a rebound and cut the deficit to just one. It also made Fredy the first player in Sounders history to score 50 regular season goals.

Another Mistake Seals the Deal

The Montero goal appeared the breath life back into the squad and the hope of an equalizer was high. That was until the 72nd minute when an unmarked Cameron Duke received a pass from Graham Zusi and was able to pocket the third and final goal of the night. It was the sealer and yet another example of the mistake filled night for the Sounders..

Scoring Summary

  • 31′ SKC – Russell

  • 42′ SKC -Sallói (Assist: Kinda, Shelton)

  • 51′ SEA – Montero

  • 72′ SKC – Duke (Assist: Zusi, Russell)
