Emerald Downs: It’s Mile Week! Fields set for Longacres Mile & the Distaff

Paul Beattie

The 85th running of the Longacres Mile was run on a Thursday night with no fans. The 86th edition of the Northwest classic is back where it belongs on Sunday afternoon before thousands of fans. The field of 11 features shippers trying to come in and steal the biggest race of the year, plenty of speed for a speed favoring track but is it too much speed setting up mid or even deep closers?

Plenty of Longacres Mile Champion veterans in this race beginning with jockey Juan Gutierrez who is the winningest jockey of all time at Emerald Downs and has won 3 Mile’s including the 2005 on No Giveaway which also is the longest shot ever to win the Mile at 60-1. Gutierrez then won the 2007 Mile on The Great Face and his last win was just last season winning that Thursday night race with Anothertwistafate. Juan gets the call on 2nd morning-line favorite Anyportinastorm who lost by just a head to Law Abiden Citizen.

Javier Matias is Mile champion rider he won on local favorite Barkley. Jennifer Whitaker the first and only woman

jockey to win the big race did so back in 2008 aboard Wasserman. Both horses trained by Howard Belvoir who also trained Assessment for a total of 3 Mile Championships. Matias will get to ride closer Unmachable trained by Jack McCartney and Whitaker rides Muncey from Belvoir’s barn.

Trainer Blaine Wright is now a trainer champion winning his 1st Mile last season with Anothertwistafate and looking to go back-to-back with Windribbon.
