Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that Harry Maguire is struggling to adapt to his playing style. However, he reinforced Maguire’s position as captain, saying he had “no reason to change that”. Maguire, 28, has struggled for form this season, and endured a difficult game in Saturday lunchtime’s 1-1 draw with Southampton at Old Trafford. He often appears more confident while playing for England as part of a back five, something Rangnick alluded to before United’s clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday evening. Asked about Maguire’s form, the coach replied: “I think after he came back from his injury he did extremely well. He had a very good performance against West Ham. “In the last two games he had some weaker moments both against Southampton and when we conceded the goal against Burnley. “The way we are playing now is new to him because in the English national team he is used to playing in a back three and here at Manchester United in a back four — but not being as proactive with that kind of defence when we try and be on the front foot.“This is something new to him and it will take some time for him to get used to that and adjusted to that.”However, he emphasised Maguire’s position as captain, saying: “But again, he is our captain and I don’t see any reason to change that. He is also a player who has to develop and get better like all the other players.” (Photo: OLI SCARFF/AFP via Getty Images)
