Joey Beauchamp, the former Oxford United winger, has died at the age of 50.Beauchamp joined his hometown club Oxford as a trainee in 1987 and went on to make 428 appearances for the side.He made the 10th-highest appearances in Oxford’s history and is their fifth-highest all-time top goalscorer with 80.Beauchamp made 124 league appearances for Oxford in his first spell at the club, before leaving for West Ham United in 1994 for a fee of £1 million. His move to east London did not last, however, as he grew homesick. Having not played a game for West Ham, Beauchamp was sold to Swindon Town in the same summer, where he spent a season. The winger then returned to Oxford and went on to make a further 238 appearances and cement his status as a cult hero — despite his brief tenure at rivals Swindon.Beauchamp’s career came to an end in 2002 after a toe injury. In a statement, Oxford said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of a true Oxford United great.“Rest in peace, Joey Beauchamp.”(Photo: Phil Cole/Allsport UK)
