Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is expected to miss at least two weeks with an ankle injury suffered during the Club World Cup final on Saturday. It rules the 23-year-old out of the Champions League tie with Lille next Tuesday, and leaves him battling to be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on February 27. Mount was replaced by Christian Pulisic after only 31 minutes when an opponent fell on him. He left the stadium on crutches. However, The Athletic understands that the injury is not as bad as first feared — and certainly not as severe as the ankle injury which kept Romelu Lukaku out for a month in October. It appears to be a similar injury to one suffered by Mount in September 2019 after a challenge from Valencia midfielder Francis Coquelin. Back then, Mount returned to action against Liverpool only five days later. However, Chelsea are minded to be more conservative with his recovery on this occasion, rather than risk returning him to action too soon. Mount has made 34 appearances for Chelsea this season, and has started 10 of the club’s last 11 league fixtures.(Photo: Michael Regan – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)
