Canadiens trade Tyler Toffoli to Flames for first-, fifth-round picks, Tyler Pitlick, prospect

The Calgary Flames are acquiring Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens, the team announced on Monday. Calgary will send first- and fifth-round picks, forward Tyler Pitlick and forward prospect Emil Heineman back to Montreal.Toffoli, 29, has recorded nine goals and 17 assists in 37 games played this season. He goes to a Flames team with a 26-13-6 record, second in the Pacific division.Toffoli went No. 47 in the 2010 NHL Draft to the Los Angeles Kings. He spent eight seasons with the Kings, which included winning the Stanley Cup in 2014. Flames coach Darryl Sutter coached that L.A. team. "I've been chasing Tyler Toffoli since my days in Phoenix and his draft year," Flames GM Brad Treliving said. "You look at the data on him, when you dig into it, the ability to drive play, shot generation and shot suppression is strong."The 2022 first-round pick heading to the Canadiens is top-10 protected. If it's top 10, the Canadiens would receive a 2023 first-rounder and a 2024 fourth-rounder instead. The fifth-round pick is in the 2023 draft.Pitlick, 30, had two assists in 25 games for Calgary. Montreal is his sixth team in eight seasons.Heineman was a second-round pick by the Florida Panthers in 2020. Florida traded him to Calgary in a trade for Sam Bennett last year.The Canadiens are 8-33-7, currently last in the NHL.
